ENVE Composites M Series 60 Forty Carbon Mountain Bike 29” DT240 Wheelset is ENVE’s wheel quiver killer. It’s designed around the idea that the rider will do 60% descending, 40% ascending. While it’s light, and at 1570g for the 28-spoke version with Centerlock rotor mounts, it’s plenty sturdy.
ENVE is proof that American designs can also be built in the United States. The 32mm deep, 23mm wide internal (29mm external) are light and strong. Light, at 856g for the rim set. The rim is still plenty strong. Thanks to a hookless, solid bead design that never burps, and molded spoke holes just large enough for a spoke to pass through, the rim is toughest where other carbon rims are weakened. Spoke nipples are internal-- a standard 3.2mm hex spoke key will take care of them.
On the hub side of the spokes, they’ve only left room for the spoke to pass through, and that hole is molded rather than drilled. This results in a stronger wheel in two ways. One is that with no cutting or drilling to go from molded to finished product, there’s greater consistency from rim to rim, and they can deliver greater strength. The nipple itself sits between the interior and exterior walls, and
ENVE uses DT Swiss 240 hubs rather than designing their own. Their focus is on the rim, and DT Swiss does an excellent job at building hubs. It also means it’s easier to find parts if you find yourself wearing hub components out. It’s a 15mm thru-axle front and 12x142mm rear. The hubs come with either Centerlock or six bolt rotor mounts. Centerlock is lighter and offers the flexibility to go six-bolt.
The connecting tissue is formed with DT Aerolite spokes. These wires are strong, light, and yes, aero. Even at off-road speeds, marginal gains can add up.
The wheels come with ENVE’s tubeless kit, of rim tape and valve. Of course, if you want to go tubed, all you need to do is simply remove the valve.
The ENVE M Series 60 Forty Carbon 29” Wheelset with DT Swiss 240 hubs reduces the rolling weight of your 29er.
